Dulles Airport was opened on November 17, 1962. President John F. Kennedy dedicated the building.
The airport was named for the late Secretary of State John Foster
An Eastern Airlines Super Electra, on a flight from Newark, New Jersey, was the first commercial aircraft to land at the new airport.
6 airlines operated from Dulles in 1962 and the airport handled 52,800 passengers in the first year

In 2002, Dulles has 34 airlines and will serve more than 18 million passengers
